The Mission of Youth Services is to provide leadership and personal growth opportunities to young people in the chapter's jurisdiction.  Youth will learn a sense of volunteerism, philanthropy, and involvement in a cause, while learning to participate with and lead others.

Youth Clubs are active in 5 area high schools.  The chapter hosts one more club for youth that are unaffiliated or home-schooled.

Clubs meet regularly to work on projects and activities throughout the year.  They take on a single project each year to call their own, but the Youth Clubs also support other chapter services, activities, and fundraising events.

One Youth Club member serves on the Chapter Board of Directors representing the other members of the various clubs and provides the youth perspective to the full board.

Red Cross Youth Club membership is open to all high school students.  For more information, contact Sarah Franklin, Youth Services Coordinator, at 885-9121 ext 222.

"Invisible Children" project a success at educating and raising funds to help.

Background: In the midst of civil war in Uganda, refugee families flee the fighting and stay in refugee camps.  Soldiers from the various factions raid the camps and kidnap young boys and men and force them to join, fight, and kill.  To avoid being kidnapped, young boys leave the camp at night, traveling to nearby cities, and spend the night sleeping in hallways, alley, and gutters, returning to their families at the camps during the day.

Youth Club in Action:  Our High School Youth Club leaders, Emily Holder, and Katie Hurrelbrink (club president) heard about the 'Invisible Children' and decided to make it their project for the year.

In a wonderful display of leadership, the entire club became driven to make a difference for these Ugandan children.  They learned to write a grant proposal, receiving support from the Wal-Mart Foundation.  They took their message on the road, speaking in front of other school assemblies, civic groups and other organizations, spreading the word of the 'Invisible Children.'

Finally, they organized a night walk to raise awareness and money to send to Uganda.  The money will help buy school supplies, food, and other essentials needed by the children and their families.  All told, the Youth Club raised more than $1,700 at their night walk.
