The Red Cross is a volunteer-led organization - from the national
chairman and the Board of Governors to the chapter chair and the local Board of
Directors, it is volunteers that set the policy and direction for every level of
the organization. It is the role of the few paid staff members and a large
cadre of service delivery volunteers that put the policies into practice
delivering Red Cross services to those who need our help.
The slogan is true. Being a Red Cross Volunteer is "The
Hardest Job You Will Never Get Paid To Do." Here's a list
of some of the key positions filled by volunteers:
-
Disaster Services
Disaster Action Team (DAT) member, responding to
local, single-family disasters
Disaster Response Team member, trained and
standing-by in case a large disaster happens. You can make
yourself available for assignments to disaster relief operations
locally, in the triad, in the state, or anywhere across the nation.
You decide your range and your availability.
Disaster Services Training Instructors, teaching the
courses new volunteers need to take to help provide Red Cross
disaster assistance.
-
Health & Safety Services
Instructors, teaching a variety of possible courses
to help the public learn to save a life - teach CPR, First Aid,
Swimming, Lifeguarding, Babysitting, Pet First Aid, and many more.
-
Blood Services
Volunteers serve on committees that guide and support
area blood drives, participate in the blood drive as canteen
volunteers, recruit donors and drive sponsors, to make a blood drive
more successful.
-
Youth Services
Young adults, belonging to Red Cross clubs in area
high schools and colleges, select-manage-implement their own annual
projects. They also participate in other service delivery
opportunities. Some move up to participate in state and
national youth committees and councils, gaining valuable
experiences.
-
Special Events and Fundraising
Volunteers help with special events like our annual
Tour de Furniture bicycle ride - from committee work planning the
event, to support positions on the day of the event.
Volunteers also help with specific fund raising activities and
community awareness tours.
-
Board of Directors and Administration
Volunteers serve on the governing body of the Board
of Directors and its various supervisory committees.
Volunteers also serve on a regular basis helping in the
administration of the chapter offices and facilities.
