Disaster Services

If you have had a disaster,

and our Disaster Action Team isn't  already on the scene,

call 885-9121.

The Red Cross provides assistance to the victims of disasters, large and small, to make sure they have their emergency needs met - food, clothing, a place to stay.  In addition, we provide assistance with health and mental health services.

A Disaster Action Team (DAT) made up of local volunteers, trained in disaster response, are always ready to respond to the next incident.

The number one disaster, here and around the country, is the single-family disaster (house fire).  Our chapter will respond to an average of 60 house fires each year.  Unfortunately, this year is far from average.  Since July 1st, we have already responded to 70 73 76 fires, exceeding our annual budget by more than 25%.  And there are still 2 months left in our fiscal year.

At the same time our DAT is responding to fires, we are planning, preparing and practicing to respond to a larger disaster.  In our area we are at risk of Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Winter Storms, HazMat Incidents, Apartment Fires, Transportation and Airline accidents, and the ever present threat of a terrorist attack.

Whatever the disaster, we are responsible for responding and providing emergency assistance  to the victims.  If the disaster is larger than our resources can manage, we have the resources of our neighboring chapters in the Triad, the state, and across the country to come to our assistance.

You can be a part of our team.  Become a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer.  You set your limits.  You can be on the local-only team, or you can make yourself available to respond to larger disasters in the state, the region, or the nation.  Learn more by taking our online orientation: "Introduction to Disaster Services."  You'll find out everything you need to know to see if this is for you.

Disaster Services:  It's the hardest job you will never get paid to do!

Service to the Armed Forces

If you have an emergency, don't wait - call 885-9121.

A Caseworker is always standing by to help you.

The Red Cross provides a communications link between military families with an emergency .....and their service member stationed somewhere around the world.  All the family has to do is call their local Red Cross office.  A caseworker is available 24-hours a day, every single day of the year.

Whether the emergency is a notification message telling of a birth, a death, a severe illness, or some other emergency that requires the service member to know right away, the Red Cross is ready to help get the word through.  Our procedures include the verification of the facts of the case, and usually involve getting a statement from a doctor or other official.  The military relies on the Red Cross to pass along correct information because it's the military commander's responsibility to decide matters of emergency leave.

Our Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) also involves support for local guard and reserve units, as well as local veterans that have served their country in the past.

To get help sending an emergency message, call 885-9121, any time, day or night, even on weekends and holidays.  We are ALWAYS on duty.

It's helpful to have the following information available when you call:

 - Full Name

 - Rank/Rating

 - Branch of Service

 - SSAN or Date of Birth

 - Military Address

 - Information about the deployed unit, or home-base unit (for deployed service members only)
